Owensboro, Kentucky home becomes milestone in landmark affordable housing program

WASHINGTON - Twenty years ago, Senator Alan Cranston, Congressman Henry Gonzalez and housing advocates from across the country designed a new block grant program exclusively dedicated to producing affordable housing. Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) has produced one million units of affordable housing.

Located in Owensboro, Kentucky, the one-millionth "HOME unit" is home to Michelle Nash, a mother of three who helped to construct the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house along with Habitat for Humanity.

Foreclosure Sales Slow, but Remain Very High
The Full Story
Huge backlog of distressed properties means any housing recovery is a long way away

LOS ANGELES — Sales of homes in some stage of foreclosure declined in the first three months of the year, but they still accounted for 28 percent of all home sales — a share nearly six times higher than what it would be in a healthy housing market.

Foreclosure sales, which include homes purchased after they received a notice of default or were repossessed by lenders, hit the highest share of overall sales in a year during the first quarter, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

"It's an astronomically high number," said Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at RealtyTrac. "In a normal market, you're looking at the percentage of homes sold in foreclosure to be below 5 percent."

Redevelopment of Associated Supermarket on Mott Avenue’s Iconic Thriftway Mall in the Works

Rockaway, New York – May 31, 2011 – New York City Councilman James Sanders, Jr. (D-31), today congratulated the management and ownership of Mott Avenue’s Thriftway Mall, for their long term lease agreement with Associated Market.  The restructured agreement will expand Associated’s presence within the shopping center, and calls for the refurbishment of the current building and surrounding plaza, with construction due to begin at the end of the year.

“I am proud to be part of an ongoing process which I hope will help to revitalize downtown Far Rockaway,” said Councilman Sanders.  “For years, the Thriftway Mall has stood at the epicenter of Mott Avenue’s bustling business district, yet its potential as an engine for job creation, economic revitalization, small business, and entrepreneurial opportunity has never been fully realized.  Revitalizing the Thriftway Mall has been a hard fight, and while we hope today’s announcement is a sign of bigger things to come, the fight is far from over.  I encourage the entire Far Rockaway community to continue the fight for the economic revitalization of our community.”

Councilman Sanders has met on numerous occasions with the management of the Thriftway Mall as part of an ongoing outreach effort that he hopes will lead to the eventual refurbishment and revitalization of the plaza.  The economic fortunes of Mott Avenue’s businesses and local patrons are in many ways tied to the Mall’s strategic location within the Far Rockaway community.

Workers Protest Closure Of Peninsula Hospital
By Angela Chen, NY1

Hundreds of employees of Peninsula Hospital in Far Rockaway, Queens protested the planned closure of their workplace in Wednesday.

Peninsula officials say they have taken steps to close the hospital in the face of mounting financial pressure.

If that happens, about 1,000 employees would lose their jobs.

Union workers and elected officials said the state Department of Health can save the hospital, if Governor Andrew Cuomo would give it more money.

By late Wednesday, the city Health Department has not yet returned NY1's request for a comment, but union officials say the department has worked with a nearby hospital to create some jobs for workers who would lose their jobs.
