Margert is a HUD-approved housing counseling agency that provides assistance to persons who want to rent, buy or already own a home, and who seek to be responsible renters, buyers and owners.

Counseling and Education on Locating, Securing, or Maintaining Residence in Rental Housing

Types of Assistance: this category of service refers to one-on-one counseling and group education sessions regarding renter-related topics, including: helping clients obtain and utilize rent subsidies; pre-rental search assistance/mobility counseling; budgeting for rent payments; educating clients on landlords' and renters' rights; explaining the eviction process; ensuring clients understand their rights when faced with displacement; explaining the responsibility of the entity causing displacement; and providing assistance with locating alternative housing.

On the HUD website, you can find low-rent apartments for senior citizens and people with disabilities, as well as for families and individuals.

Senior citizen tenants under rent control or rent stabilization may be entitled to an exemption from future rent increases under the Senior Citizens Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program. (Tenants apply for SCRIE to the NYC Department for the Aging.)

Counseling on Shelter or Services for the Homeless

Types of Assistance: this includes referrals to social, community, and homeless services such as emergency shelter or transitional housing.

The NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) "prevents homelessness wherever possible and provides short-term emergency shelter and re-housing support whenever needed."

Margert is funded by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal Neighborhood Preservation Program (NPP) to administer "soft services" in Far Rockaway, which are designed to preserve and promote affordable housing for low-income, elderly and handicapped households.

These services may include, but are not limited to, tenant counseling, entitlement assistance (TANF, WIC, SSI, etc.), landlord/tenant mediation, eviction prevention, relocation and Section 8 assistance, public housing application assistance, mortgage counseling, homeownership assistance and housing-related workshops.
